Artful Violins: 21 artists and 23 works of string instrument craftsmanship
Casina delle Civette
String instruments of the finest craftsmanship and decorated as works of art are on display at the Casina delle Civette, the perfect setting for this exhibition.
These instruments, handmade by Ezia Di Labio, were created as professional violins of the highest craftsmanship according to the tradition of the master craftsman Otello Bignami from Bologna and are then decorated by artists and personalities from the world of culture who have transformed them from instruments whose function is solely musical to ones that are precious and unique and that have within them the poet, the painting, the actor, the composer, the writer, the set designer, the art historian, the singer and many others. The original project had the aim of appreciating the fine art of string instrument workmanship in Bologna. This ancient trade that balances between art and craftsmanship for the first time transforms the solely musical function of the instrument, and allows for a dialogue and contamination with other forms of art and communication. Guided tour in Italian by Maria Grazia Massafra.
The visit to the exhibit will be led by Maria Grazia Massafra, director of the Museum and curator of the exhibition who will interview the string instrument maker Ezia Di Labio, retracing the most important moments of the project from its conception through the relations with the various individuals asked to participate and the preparations for the exhibition as well as investigating some of the main aspects of the applied art of instrument-making.
